Information - Kordels Evening Primrose Oil
Evening Primrose Oil, which comes from the seeds of the evening primrose wildflower, contains large amounts of the essential fatty acid gamma-linoleic acid (GLA). This essential fatty acid is often missing from diets and is necessary for the production of prostaglandins, a group of compounds needed for good health. Evening Primrose Oil can be used for skin complaints e.g. eczema and acne, muscle and joint pain, overall health and wellbeing, high cholesterol, circulation, pre-menstrual syndrome and menopause. It also can assist weight loss by activating brown fat cells. Brown fat cells are specialised fat cells, which comprise 10% of total body fat and readily burn fat stores for energy. These fat cells are capable of burning ¼ of calories consumed. GLA - FOR HEALTH & WELLBEING Evening Primrose Oil provides 10% Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), an essential Omega 6 Fatty Acid (EFA). EFAs, often missing from the diet, cannot be manufactured in the body and are needed for synthesising compounds such as prostaglandins. Many people cannot make enough GLA for optimal health, due to genetic limitation, nutrient deficiency or blockage by other dietary factors. Evening Primrose Oil is an ideal way of obtaining GLA and it is free of blocking agents. PROSTAGLANDINS - THE HEALTH CONTROLLERS GLA, in Evening Primrose Oil, is converted to Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) in the body. PGE1 is a hormone-like compound which controls many of the body's essential functions. These include blood fat levels, acne, eczema, circulation, menopause, menstrual cramps, and weight control. CONTROLLING BLOOD FAT LEVELS Dietary intake of GLA in Evening Primrose Oil helps to keep blood 'slippery' and prevent clotting because PGE1 reduces blood platelet adhesion. The Vitamin E in Evening Primrose Oil also helps restore proper blood 'slipperiness'. CONTROLLING INFLAMMATION Increased levels of PgE1 helps balance levels of the inflammatory series 2 Prostaglandin (PGE2) leukotrienes and other highly inflammatory agents, helping to maintain healthy joints and improve mobility. IMPROVING SKIN, HAIR AND NAILS Essential fatty acids are needed for healthy skin and hair. Deficiency in EFAs results in skin lesions, flaking, dandruff, brittle nails and thinning hair. Supplementing the diet with GLA from Evening Primrose Oil has shown excellent results. MANAGING BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS A five year study led by Dr. A Houtsmuller found that diabetics on a diet rich in essential fatty acids had significantly less eye and heart disease than those on typical diets. It is possible that some of the insulin resistance which occurs in diabetics could be due to insufficient PGE1.1 PMS Evening Primrose Oil, a natural source of GLA, can relieve about 90 to 95% of women's pre-menstrual tension, according to British studies. The studies have found that two thirds of women not helped by other treatments improved on Evening Primrose Oil. WEIGHT CONTROL Dr. David Horrobin has found that GLA is remarkably effective in assisting weight loss, and that Evening Primrose Oil is a particularly valuable dietary component for those who want to lose weight. VITAMIN E - AN IMPORTANT ANTIOXIDANT Kordel's Evening Primrose Oil contains Vitamin E. Work done in the role of antioxidants in controlling free radical damage suggests that combining Evening Primrose Oil with Vitamin E may be even more effective. This is because Vitamin E, an antioxidant, protects the polyunsaturated fats from rancidity and reduces the damage caused to cell membranes by the production of free radicals. How Gamma-Linolenic Acid can help you lose fat? Gamma-linolenic acid is a fatty acid nutrient. It is an Omega 6 fatty acid. Under ideal circumstances it is made in the body from conversion of linolenic acid. However there are factors which can prevent the conversion of linolenic acid to GLA. These factors include deficiencies in the vitamins B3, B6 and C and biotin and of the minerals Magnesium and Zinc. It is thought that GLAs such as evening primrose oil assist weight loss by activating brown fat. Brown fat cells are specialised fat cells, which comprise 10% of total body fat and readily burn fat stores for energy. These fat cells are capable of burning ¼ of calories consumed. A study of 38 individuals taking EPO showed that among the 22 who were within 10% of their ideal weight, none lost any weight. Patients over the 10% limit exhibited an average lose of 9 pounds. Another study that took place in the University Hospital of Wales stated that people who are most likely to lose weight on evening primose oil are those with low sodium-potassium-ATPase activity. A study in 1979 demonstrated that GLA is indeed effective in promoting weight loss. In this study thirty-eight people tool Gamma-linolenic acid in the form of evening primrose oil for a period of eight weeks. Half of the group lost an average of 9 pounds while taking 4 capsules per day while four subjects who took 8 capsules per day lost an average of 23 pounds. Only 5 people showed no weight change. Gamma Linolenic acid is found in significant amounts in the seed oil from the Evening Primrose Plant, borage oil and blackcurrant seed oil. Doses from 90 mg to as much as 400mg of GLA have proven to be effective in weight loss programs. Ann Louise Gittleman in her book wrote "The right kind and the right amount of fat will help you lose weight effortlessly and painlessly without becoming preoccupied with dieting".
