Bones are made up of hard, extremely dense connective tissue that is constantly rebuilding itself in order to maintain a balance between bone formation and bone loss. As we age, bone formation begins to decline causing gradual bone loss and porous bones. Normally, there is a decline in bone mass after the age of 40 in both men and women.

'Primary' postmenopausal bone loss occurs in women after menopause due to accelerated bone loss following the decline in oestrogen as well as a reduction in vitamin D levels.
