L-Lysine is an essential amino acid, which means our bodies lack the ability to manufacture it. All of our L-Lysine must come from our diet. Vegetarian diets that are rich in grains and cereals can be of concern as these foods contain low levels of L-Lysine. Diets with rice being the staple diet can also cause this problem. Inadequate intake of L-Lysine can lead to poor apetite, a decrease in body weight, anemia, and enzyme disorders. Herpes attacks are characterized by the presence of clear fluid filled blisters on the face, or genital area. This is often accompanied by severe pain and itching. Researchers noticed that L-Lysine was able to slow down the growth of the herpes virus in the labarotory, leading them to attempt trials with actual sufferers. The results were excellent - pain diminished rapidly, skin lesions (sores) disappeared and new ones failed to appear. L-Lysine works by blocking the viruses ability to use the excess L-Arginine in the diet to grow faster. Foods high in L-lysine such as fish, chicken, beef, lamb, cheese, beans, brewers yeast and mung sprouts should be included in the diet. L-Lysine is also involved in collagen formation. Collagen gives connective tissues everywhere strength and elasticity.
