Information - Chloramphenicol eye ointment
Chloramphenicol eye drops/ointment is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis and other superficial eye infections. Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic which is mainly bacteriostatic in action, but exerts a bactericidal effect against some strains of gram-positive cocci and against Haemophilus Influenzae and Neisseria. It has a broad spectrum of action against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, rickettsiae and chlamydia.
Use
Chlorsig eye drops: Instil 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 2 to 6 hours. Continue for 48 hours after eye appears normal.
Chlorsig eye ointment: Apply 1.5cm of eye ointment every 3 hours.
If eye drops and ointment are used together for day and night treatment use eye drops during the day and ointment prior to bedtime. Continue for 48 hours after eye appears normal. NB: Eye drops contain the preservative phenyl mercuric acetate [0.002% w/v] while the eye ointment is free from preservative.

Important Notes
Chlorsig may distort vision temporarily · Chlorsig should not be used while wearing contact lenses or if patient is allergic to chloramphenicol · If using the ointment try to avoid contact with the eye due to possible contamination ·
Unless you have been advised to do so by your doctor you should not take Chloramphenicol Eye Ointment for more than 5 days at a time.
General hygiene recommendations [e.g. use separate face towel, discard of makeup applicators and contacts, avoid transfer to other eye] · Seek medical advice if condition does not improve in 24-48 hours.
